The professional development courses are available to all PHO staff with approval from their manager.    A certificate of completion is given at the end of a course. 

To register interest to attend one or more of these courses, PHO staff should complete the Registration Form.  Remember only participants who have registered through this site and have given complete information are allowed to attend the courses. Reminders for courses with venue details are sent 10 days before.

CALM Communications

Length of course:  1 day -  8.15-4.30pm plus E-learning found on eCampus

Course Summary:

CALM Communication will enable people to utilise effective communication strategies and remain safe when faced with challenging situations, including staff-patient, staff-family/whanau or staff-staff interactions. This will include developing an understanding of the cycle of escalation and the role that communication plays in the de-escalation of a distressed person. An e-learning package supports this face-to-face workshop, and is available on eCampus.

Course Summary:

This level one car control course is for staff who regularly drive as part of their job.  It consists of a mixture of practical and classroom sessions and is suitable for all drivers regardless of age and experience. Bookings for this course are taken directly by National Advanced Driving School and are not funded by Learning & Development.   A purchase order number is required at the time of booking.  A special discounted fee of $275 inc GST is offered to CMH funded staff.

Participants will learn about:

  • Tyre maintenance and effect on vehicle performance
  • Emergency braking techniques, both ABS and standard brakes
  • Steering and searching
  • Driver position
  • Skid avoidance
  • Cornering skills
  • Defensive driving principles and The Road Code

Vehicles are not provided for these courses - it is the responsibility of participants to arrange a car. A CMH pool car may be used for this course, depending on availability. Where possible please use the same model of vehicle as you would normally use at work e.g. station wagon. ( A maximum of 2 people may share a vehicle at the same course for the level 1 course. A separate vehicle is required for each participant for the level 2 course)

There is a maximum of two people per car - we will let you know when you book if there are others attending
that session so that you can share a vehicle.

This is a public course that CMH has negotiated places at a discounted rate.   A cancellation fee of $100 will be charged to your RC code for cancellations with less than 10 working days notice. No refunds will be given.

Essential Skills for Administrators

The ever-changing workplace means that today's administrators have a diverse range of tasks to do, and people to work with. This dynamic one-day course explores the diverse role and functions of working in an office and examines the key attributes of an excellent administrator. Learn how to plan and manage your time effectively, and how to get the best from the team. Through discussion, individual and group tasks you will identify the principles of good business writing, the communication skills required in the workplace, and tactics for better management of time and stress. By the end of the course you will be well equipped with the skills and knowledge to be a successful office administrator.

Course Summary:

This course will allow intermediate administrators and administration assistants to gain knowledge and an understanding of the diverse role of the administrator and develop skills and strategies necessary for the effective functioning of this pivotal position.

Course Summary:

For those who experience mental illness stigma and discrimination can be one of the biggest barriers to recovery.  As healthcare workers, we often have the opportunity and the desire to combat stigma, but lack the tools to do so.

This training will empower staff to counter stigma and discrimination when they encounter it their service or community.  Over the course of the day staff will examine the causes and effects of stigma and discrimination, with a special look into the effects on recovery.  At the end of the day staff will create an individualized Action Plan

Participants will learn to:

  • Describe effects of discrimination and stigma
  • Create an individual Action Plan for countering stigma
  • Apply at least three positive strategies to incorporate into professional practice
  • Identify practical ways to challenge stigma and discrimination
  • Recognise the need for their own self-care when dealing with stigma and discrimination
  • Include knowledge of stigma and discrimination to support themselves when  advocating for clients

Target Group

Mental Health Workers, Nurses, Kaimahi Maori, Psychologists, Key-workers, Psychiatrists, Support Workers, Occupational Therapists, Social Workers and other interested staff.

Two Day Health and Safety Representative Orientation Training

This two day training is offered by the CMH Occupational Health & Safety Service to prepare staff to assume the role of a Health & Safety Representative. This is a mandatory course for all H&S Reps who have not previously completed two day H&S Rep training course.

Health and Safety Representative Update

This is a two hour session with Occupational Health and Safety Service which provides an annual refresher on the role of the H&S Rep.

Course Summary:

This mandatory introductory course provides participants an opportunity to journey and participate in an applied, interactive and fun training programme.  The session is aimed at improving skills, knowledge and understanding in order to better engage with OUR Pacific patients, their families and our communities.

During the session you will learn about Pacific Peoples, their culture and values with an emphasis on how these can influence their views of health and wellness.

Participants will gain insight of Pacific peoples holistic world view and approach to life. They will also understand how intercultural communication can impact on the quality of service delivery.

The training offers participants the opportunity to reflect and share stories,  ideas and any best practice models from each other’s experiences in working with Pacific patients, families and communities.

Participants will:

·         gain understanding of  who are Pacific peoples in Aotearoa

·         improve cultural knowledge, skill acquisition and best practice solutions to  working with Pacific

·         learn about key Pacific values, principles and the Pacific holistic world view and approach to life

·         hear about the beliefs and practices around traditional healing

Course Summary:

Smoking is the number one modifiable cause of death and disease worldwide.  With more than 88,000 people
living in counties - Manukau who smoke, the effects of tobacco smoke can be seen within every ward and department of CMH.

This training will give you the practical skills that you need to address smoking with your patients.  You will feel confident helping patients to manage their cravings while in hospital and will know what options are available for those wanting ongoing support.  There is an emphasis on understanding and offering nicotine replacement
therapy (i.e. patches, gum and lozenges).

At the end of this short course you can choose to complete a brief assessment, which will qualify you to provide subsidy cards ('Quit Cards") for nicotine replacement therapy.

Participants will learn: 

  • Understand and offer nicotine replacement therapy (patches, gum and lozenges)

  • Ways to effectively support patients who smoke
