A new tool that will collect reliable data on patient care and enable the right staff resources to be put in place to care for patients, will soon be introduced at Middlemore Hospital.

Counties Manukau District Health Board chair, Vui Mark Gosche welcomes the approval of the TrendCare business case by the Ministry of Health.

“TrendCare will bring Counties Manukau in line with other DHBs who already have the tool and will also allow us to implement the Care Capacity Demand Management (CCDM) programme and the Accord, which is designed to support safe staffing across the DHB,” says Mr Gosche.

“The CCDM is a crucial part of the Accord signed by the NZNO, District Health Boards and the Director- General of Health to ensure safe staffing levels are achieved, and is part of our commitment to addressing the concerns raised by our nursing and midwifery staff.

“Patient care is at the heart of what we do and TrendCare will make a difference when it is implemented across the hospital, emergency department, community, mental health and maternity services,” says Chief Nurse, Jenny Parr.

TrendCare will determine the nursing workload and allow staff to make evidence-based decisions about having the right staff in the right place with the right skills, based on the needs of the patient.

The DHB will look to implement the new system, which will replace the Assignment and Workload Manager (AWM) tool, over the next 12-18 months, with a project team to develop a planned approach for implementation and transition from the AWM to the new system from mid-2019.

“We are committed to patient and staff safety and TrendCare will improve visibility of a patient’s current situation and staff workload, and therefore support the decision- making process and improve the quality of patient care as well as ensuring safe staff levels,” says Mr Gosche.
