Health Science Academies focus for Fit for Purpose Camp

Year 13 health science acacademies 2019

Latest News 6 May 2019 | Equipping Year 13 students with life skills and knowledge to enable their transition into tertiary studies was top of mind at the Health Science Academies Fit for Purpose camp hosted recently by the CM Health Pacific Health Development team.

Programme Co-ordinator, Ma’aola Ioane says the camp, which is held annually, is a way to help students network and to stay motivated.

“We use this as an opportunity to link our Pacific students to health professionals and industry people which in turn will help motivate them towards a career in health,” says Ola.

“It’s a chance for our final year students to reflect on what their goals are and what their career aspirations are in terms of the health pathway.”

The camp also included sessions with Pacific health professional guest speakers who shared their experiences with the students. Other workshops included a Tertiary Essentials and Attributes that Matter (TEAM) session as part of Programme W&AT! (Working & Achieving Together) where students learned about the realities of the ‘real world’ and the tools they need to cope.  A workshop on health career pathways was also held as well as outdoor activities for students

“We love bringing students together in this way, because they’re learning in so many ways, from social skills to finding a way that will help motivate and help them focus on their goals,” adds Ola

“We’re making this investment in our students because we believe in them and know that they can have a genuine career in health if they want it”
