Peripheral IV Cannulation & Phlebotomy Clinical Skills Demonstration

Both peripheral intravenous cannulation and phlebotomy require a high degree of precision, attention to detail, and empathy toward patients. The safety of patients and clinicians is of utmost importance during these procedures.

This practical training workshop is specifically designed to assist Registered Nurses and other qualified clinicians working in Primary Health Care towards competency underpinned by theoretical knowledge and the practical skills required to insert peripheral intravenous line (PIVL) and/or take blood samples.

Scope

The training program does not allow participants to perform:

• peripheral IV cannulation in patients less than 15 years of age
• phlebotomy in patients less than 10 years of age

This training is not applicable to those wanting to train as a Phlebotomist.

This is not a certification programme. Attendance and receipt of certificate of attendance does not imply or certify competency of the recipient. Further, attendance/receipt of certificate does not reflect scope of practice.

Learning Outcomes

• Anatomy and Physiology: Understanding the vascular system and the specific veins suitable for cannulation and phlebotomy
• Infection Control: Emphasizing the importance of maintaining an aseptic environment to prevent complications.
• Patient Assessment: Learning how to assess a patient's suitability for cannulation, considering factors like medical history, allergies, and any potential contraindications.
• Technique and Procedures: Detailed instruction on how to perform cannulation and phlebotomy, including selecting the appropriate device size, device insertion, and securing the PIVL in place.
• Complications and Troubleshooting: Understanding potential complications like infiltration or phlebitis and how to address them.
• Legal and Ethical Considerations: Discussing patient consent, documentation, and professional ethics.
• Safety: Training on minimizing the risk of needlestick injuries and other safety measures.
• Patient Communication: Developing effective communication skills to explain the procedure, address patient concerns, and ensure patient comfort.

This is facilitated by Te Whatu Ora Counties Manukau Vascular Access Clinical Nurse Specialist and B Braun Educator.

5. Undergo Supervised Clinical Practice

It is the responsibility of your workplace to provide clinical supervision
