A huge thank you to our dedicated volunteers!

National Volunteer Week, a week dedicated to recognising the hard work and commitment of volunteers, runs from 20-26 June 2021.

Not just this week, but every day, it is important to appreciate those around us who give their time to help others.

At CM Health we have a pool of around 30 volunteers who visit patients and help with wayfinding and admin work.

"It is truly amazing to have the volunteers here. They make such a huge difference to the people walking through our doors confused and trying to find places within the hospital.  Our lovely volunteers smiling and asking 'How can I help you today' makes all the difference." says Priti Naidu, Volunteer Coordinator.

Meet one of our volunteers

Annie Zijdel is no stranger to Middlemore Hospital, after all, she was a nurse at CM Health for almost 30 years and now volunteers here.

In 1986, Annie moved to New Zealand from the Netherlands and started working as a nurse in Coronary Care. After two and a half years, she moved into District Nursing and was located in Building 38.

After many years of service with us, Annie retired but didn't like sitting at home so started volunteering at the Auckland Airport. After lockdown, Annie and a few Auckland Airport volunteers; Kim, Gael, and Robyn, came to volunteer at Middlemore Hospital

"After years of nursing, it was nice to be away from a hospital environment. But after being back here, I am really enjoying it. I enjoy helping people and it's also nice to see ex-patients and their families and catch up on their health. It's also nice to see my son and daughter-in-law, who both work here at Middlemore Hospital. "says Annie.

"People come to us for help finding their way around the hospital. Sometimes they can be distressed because their loved one is somewhere like ED or Medical Short Stay. We walk with them and try our best to comfort them. My nursing background comes in handy with just comforting people.

"We also see a lot of patients as we do magazine drops to patients and waiting rooms. The magazines are old magazine stock supplied by the chemist here, which is nice."

If you know someone interested in joining our volunteer staff, please email Priti Naidu.
