An Officer … and a Gentleman!

We are very proud to have our own Dr Lindsay Mildenhall, Neonatologist, recognised in the New Year Honours 2022 and also appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to neonatal intensive care and resuscitation training.

These distinguished honours are appointed by Queen Elizabeth herself and quite a recognition.

Lindsay specialises in the care of newborn babies and until recently held the position of Clinical Head of Kidz First’s Neonatal Intensive and Special Care Service at Middlemore Hospital – a role he had been in since September 1998.

“We are so proud of Dr Mildenhall’s contribution to children and their whaanau in our district. It is really pleasing that his work and commitment to the Kidz First Neonatal and Paediatric services and child health more widely, is recognised in this honour. We join New Zealanders in congratulating Lindsay and thanking him for his service.” says Margie Apa, Chief Executive Officer.

Lindsay is passionate about improving outcomes for newborns and he has made a significant contribution through his work in this field.

Approximately 10% of newborn babies need resuscitation and support to establish breathing with the intention of improving outcomes and decreasing mortality.

Lindsay’s dedication to his work has seen him take on responsibility for overseeing and training the instructors for the Newborn Life Support (NLS) system- a national programme used to teach newborn resuscitation skills to doctors.

His commitment to the preparation, writing, and dissemination of newborn resuscitation guidelines is also a notable achievement in his career.

As well as this, he is a long-term member and contributor to both the national and international committees on resuscitation.

Lindsay has led the Neonatal Services through busy times with ever-growing admissions as well as overseeing the development, extension, and building of three units – the last one being the extended level two care area which was opened in November 2021.

“Our Kidz First Neonatal and Paediatric teams are immensely proud of Dr Mildenhall’s receiving this well-deserved Honour’ says Nettie Knetsch, General Manager of Kidz First.

Congratulations on your impressive achievement and recognition Lindsay.
