Latest news 5 December 2018 | Over the festive season, there is an increase in alcohol-related presentations to the Emergency Department. Many of these accidents and injuries can be avoided by reducing alcohol intake.
Leading up to the summer break, Counties Manukau Health is encouraging staff to have conversations about alcohol with patients and spread the message: “ease up on the drink”. From the 3rd to the 9th of December, activities during the “Alcohol Harm Awareness Week" in Middlemore Hospital will promote the benefits of drinking less over the holidays.
“Over the summer months, up to one quarter of our Emergency Department patients are here because of their drinking”, says Dr Sylvia Boys.
Check out our video in collaboration with St John and Counties Manukau Police and share the “Ease up on the drink” message.
People who are concerned about their drinking can visit www.alcohol.org.nz to find out more about how to reduce their alcohol intake or call 1737 to speak to a trained counsellor.
