ED Specialist receives ACEM Service Award

Latest News 13 November 2019|A CM Health ED specialist has become the first NZ recipient of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) Service Award.

Dr Bhavani Peddinti is based at Middlemore Hospital and was presented the award for his significant contribution in education and training as well as services on College committees and councils.

The College is a non-profit organisation responsible for training emergency physicians and advancing professional standards in emergency medicine in Australia and New Zealand.

“I was very surprised to be given the award by the College, I’m humbled and honoured and would like to acknowledge my fellow colleagues who are dedicated to the speciality,” says Dr Peddinti, who is a Fellow of the College.

“I enjoy being part of highly trained and educated team of emergency doctors and nurses, who are constantly working under sometimes challenging environments, to help people who are acutely unwell and create a positive impact on people’s lives.”

Dr Peddinti began his medical training in India and worked in Palmerston North and Taranaki prior to completing his Fellowship in Emergency Medicine in Auckland.

He has had a long relationship with Middlemore Hospital, having started as a trainee registrar with the hospital in 1991 and returned as a specialist in 1996. He was the Clinical Head of ED between 1997 and 2008, before taking up a role with another DHB. He came back to Middlemore Hospital in 2016.

“I have a special attachment to Middlemore Hospital, as I was part of the team that re-designed our current Emergency Department, between 1998 and 2001 through an entire systems approach,” he says.

“We changed the physical design and many of the processes involved in the assessment of patients, and introduced computers, electronic labs, radiology, discharge summaries and, importantly, linking our care to the GPs and other primary care providers.

“I love working for the community of South Auckland, where there are high health needs. I would like to think that I am contributing in some way to ensuring our communities get the best care when they come into our hospital.”
