Making Breastfeeding Work in the Workplace

Breastfeeding while being a working parent can have challenges, but a supportive workplace and having the right resources can make all the difference.

Te Whatu Ora Counties Manukau is enhancing the care for our breastfeeding workers – whether you’re returning from parental leave, or joining the organisation with a baby, we want to support you to breastfeed in the workplace if you want to.

Breastfeeding is part of the wellness care that an organisation has for its employees. We do this to care for our team members and for the well-being of our whaanau and wider communities.

Part of this commitment has seen the creation of a breastfeeding-friendly workplace liaison role to help foster a supportive organisational culture towards employees breastfeeding.

Dr Lesa Freeman, Midwife Co-ordinator Quality Improvement, says a part this work will include the renovation of the employee breastfeeding room which is beside the spiritual centre.

“It's invigorating to be involved in this project because I believe this will really make a difference in people's lives, says Lesa.

“There are a number of people here at Counties who are very passionate to see this project through and make a difference.”
