No injuries as result of fire at Tamaki Oranga

No patients or staff have been injured after a fire broke out at Counties Manukau Health’s Tamaki Oranga mental health recovery unit in Bairds Road, Otara.

The fire, believed to have started in the North wing of the building, was discovered by staff at about 9.30pm (11 September) following the activation of a fire alarm and sprinklers.

The Fire Service was immediately called, and as a result of the quick action of staff, all 15 patients and six staff were able to exit the building safely.

The North wing has suffered water damage however Fire Service have cleared the larger East wing for occupation.

All staff and patients are safely back in the building. Pastoral support is being provided to service users if required.

Investigations are on-going as to the cause of the fire. No further comment can be made.
