Middlemore doctor honoured

Dr Ross Nicholson, one of our doctors has been awarded a top honour by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.

The prestigious Mentor of the Year Award is given annually to the College Member who has demonstrated an outstanding and lasting contribution to the training and education of trainees.

Ross will receive this award at Te Papa in September of this year and it’s the first time this honour has been given to a New Zealand paediatrician or physician. 

 

The Kidz First Paediatric Department at Middlemore Hospital said, “We are extremely proud of the educational leadership, training advocacy and mentoring that Dr Nicholson has provided over the last 30 years. Ross held the position of Director of Physician Education at Kidz First for 22 years and was involved with and chaired numerous National and Australasian college committees.

“Ross has been an inspiration and important mentor to many Paediatricians in Kidz First, our region, New Zealand and Australia. “

Now retired and living in Nelson:, Ross said: “I was tickled pink to hear my colleagues had commended me for this award. I have felt blessed over my career to feel part of a bigger whole.

The team at Kidz First have had my back through thick and thin. and I have been privileged to lead and guide them in the important mahi of training  the next generation of paediatricians.

“In the twilight of my career I still wonder  about ‘the good enough doctor’ and how this idea might shape medical practice into the future in Aotearoa ”
